Windows XP SP2: RIP July 6, 2010

This has been one of the longest runs of Operating Systems in computer history.  With the quality of Windows xp, the disaster that was Windows Vista, the explosion in the size and demand on networks and the recent economic downturn, companies have held onto Windows xp Service Pack 2.  However, it has become too long in the tooth and Microsoft is going to stop supporting it.  Two main things here; do you think this is a good change and how can Microsoft repeat the xp success?

Change is hard, and this will be no exception. Microsoft will stop supporting Windows XP SP2 after July 13. That means no more security fixes on Patch Tuesday. You can soften the blow by updating to Windows XP SP3, which will be supported until April 2014. But that doesn’t make this much easier. It’s still a major update, and major updates are fraught with problems. It’s a fact of life.
